Ubuntu One - maybe some time later

nazgee — czw., 05/06/2010 - 13:19

I've been really keen on getting into new Canonical's cloud. Maybe my expectations were too bloated up, but honestly I can find only one pro at the moment: it's idea.

The concept is to ease syncing of resources between multiple workstations- you can (in theory) sync chosen files and folders from your home directory, contacts, and e.g. firefox' tabs. It sounded like a huge relief for me, as I am working on no more than few small projects at the moment, but from multiple locations. Syncing these resources 'by hand' is pain in the ass, and fully blown version control is not an option. And here comes the (potential) rescue - cloud, and folders syncing.

Setting it up on different versions of Ubuntu is a breeze. So far so good. My first attempt was to test contacts' synchronizing. I spent some time trying hard, to finally find out that contacts syncing service is down at the moment. Shit happens.

After all- that's not what I was looking for. Let's give a real goody a try- files syncing. After One is set up you get a new item in context menu when you hit RMB on a folder- "Synchronize on Ubuntu One". It seems easy to use, and it really is. The only downside is that it takes ages to sync. It took 18 minutes to upload 2.2KB of my hand-made scripts.

To sum up- great concept, but servers seem not ready for it yet. I'll give it another try some time later, though.
